The Taylor School offers dance education of the highest quality to K-12 students in the New York City area and beyond. Through the practice of dancing and dancemaking, students will deepen their understanding and appreciation of dance as an art form, and of Paul Taylor as one of the most influential modern dance choreographers of all time. Our comprehensive programming includes everything from a single master class to shorter workshops, assemblies, longer in-school residencies, and after-school programs.
Jody and John Arnhold Tier 3 Dance Education and Audience Development Initiative
This program capitalizes on the vast number of seats in the Koch Theater to offer thousands of New York public school children, along with parents, teachers and admin. the chance to attend PTAMD performances at Lincoln Center free of charge. In addition to up to 100 free tickets per NYC K-12 public school, this program also offers schools free educational programming to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of the performance. Schools can choose from the following options:
- Pre-performance workshop (held at participating K-12 schools)
- Post-performance workshop (held at Lincoln Center)
- A Paul Taylor Study Guide geared to the dances in the selected performance
- A Professional Development Workshop for classroom and dance teachers (held at the Paul Taylor Studios)
Taylor Master classes run 90 minutes and offer a comprehensive experience of the athleticism and artistry that the Taylor style is known for. Taylor master classes are customized for level of age/ability and number of students, and always include a Taylor teaching artist and live accompaniment.
Workshops / Assemblies
Taylor workshops, (longer than the master classes), and assemblies, (shorter than master classes), meet the needs of schools with smaller arts education budgets. Workshops and/or assemblies can include among many possibilities: live dance experiences, video showings, lecture-demonstrations, and Q and A discussions.
In-school Taylor curricula nurture the whole learner through the experience of Taylor dances, creative exploration, technical study, reflective processing, and the facilitated production of a Taylor-style work. Taylor K-12 curricula meet or exceed the National Core Arts Standards for Dance, as well as the NY State Learning Standards for the Arts, and the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts in Dance.
Taylor residencies, customized to suit the needs of the partner school, include live accompaniment whenever possible.
Taylor after-school programs offer a robust dance experience within the after-school environment. These generally follow a semester based structure, culminating in an informal showing at the end of every term.
Taylor after-school programs include live accompaniment whenever possible.
